Sufficient food is available for increasing numbers of people. However, dependence of countries on international trade in foodstuffs has grown considerably in recent decades, a new study by the Finish Aalto University indicates.

According to a study by scientists of Aalto University, Finland, “From Food Insufficiency towards Trade Dependency: A Historical Analysis of Global Food Availability”, the proportion of the population getting enough food (more than 2,500 calories a day) nearly doubled to 61 per cent between 1965 and 2005. In the same period, the number of those living on a critically low food supply (less than 2,000 calories a day) shrank from 51 to three per cent. It was the first time that researchers of Aalto University had examined the development of food availability in recent decades.
